Trip Advisor listed Maya Bistro as the best Placencia, Belize had to offer. Most items in this Central American village were priced fairly, but a taxi ride to Maya Bistro, seven miles from our hotel, would cost us sixty bucks one way. I suspect the speed bumps add up. When a desk clerk at the resort overheard our deep desire to eat at the restaurant, he offered to drive the family. We were determined to eat this food and murder was worth the risk. read more

Richard Blanco’sbrilliant words. The awe-inspiring Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. President Obama’s message. Purple gloves majesty joining amber waves of bangs. Did you ever notice that about two weeks after bangs are cut in, they’re always brushed to the side awaiting the grow-out?

I must add Doris Kearns Goodwin and Richard Blanco to my dinner guest wishlist that already includes Ken Burns, Steven Colbert, Hillary Clinton, Lena Dunham, Woody Allen, and Malcolm Gladwell. For sure, I would serve a melange of roasted vegetables, headed by sweet, fragrant fennel. In some circles, after fennel, it wouldn’t much matter what other vegetables were included. It first caught my attention when this magazine heralded the salad dressing we can’t live without. I have been splashing it on anything in the salad family, using the term salad loosely, and a scant amount is awaiting my return from here.

Although making your own salad dressing isn’t so easy in crunchtime, I promise this one is a do-aheader that comes together in ten minutes. It will dress up even the bitterest of winter greens for the next couple of weeks. We are showing it off in two salads: Fennel, Cucumber & Pear and Kale & Kumquat (upcoming). read more

Belize or bust in our house. I may have fought harder for this trip than any other. One possible sliver of time, when school vacations aligned and we safely circumnavigated all teenage social engagements, provided my resistant family a vacation they’ve earned and needed like never before.
